After a trip to the Valdese library we head a bit further down the road to Children’s Memorial Park to cool off in the creek. We set up our blankets and lay out our plethora of snacks. We have our little toy boat ready to watch as it’s floats down the slow moving creek. That is when we see not one, not two, but three Northern Watersnakes in the water! Although this slithering beauties are harmless we are sure to give them ample space. We spend the afternoon intently watching, enthralled with their graceful movements. We play on the playground and meet some new friends. But it is right before we leave to go home that the climax of our visit occurs! As I am loading up our stuff, I spot a frog in the water. As I approuch closer . . . wait . . . that’s not just a frog! The larger of the three Northern Watersnakes as the frog trapped in his jaw, wrestling him in the water. What a fantastic display of nature! Way better than spending the afternoon in a classroom!
